The Unusual Suspects - Introduction to An Unusuals Fic

My daughter and I began watching The Unusuals on Netflix this summer because of our shared love for Jeremy Renner. We generally don't go for police shows, but this one roped us in from the start with its quirky characters and dark humor. We watched all nine episodes in a stretch, marathoning all Friday night, and then our Roomie managed to find the tenth and final episode Saturday afternoon.

But when we reached the last scenes of the tenth episode, we were devastated. "That can't be it," we cried. "How can a show this good get cancelled?" Our frequent lamented phrase over the next few days was, "There're only ten!?" (Ironically similar to the summer before, when we watched Doctor Who and David Tennant's 10th Doctor departed for Matt Smith's 11th and we repeatedly wept, "There's only Ten!")

Weeks passed thus. We re-watched the half-season of Unusuals episodes, falling even further in love with the characters, only to be once again cruelly deprived of any closure at its end.

At the beginning of July, I asked my daughter what she would like for her birthday. She listlessly responded with her usual: drawing pencils, a new wig cap for her Wendy cosplay, maybe a Cthulhu plushie. Then a day later, she hit me with a request: Write an Unusuals story that would leave our beloved characters in a better place than where they are.

As with all such requests, it started out small. A one-shot, I thought. 20,000 words at most. I'd write a buddy-cop piece with Walsh and Shraeger trying to outwit a master thief before he can pull off a major heist. But this story very quickly shifted focus from Walsh and Shraeger to Delahoy and Banks, and the master thief morphed into a criminal mastermind of Gotham-esque proportions. Now a month and nearly 50,000 words later, I'm wrapping up not a one-shot but a five part series that has made my daughter laugh and cry and growl angrily at me from across the breakfast table.

So, I'll be posting the story here, on tumblr, on my website, and on fanfiction.net. It's still a work in progress, on account of school and RL, but it will get there. My next post will contain the actual first part of the story...

I'll be posting the first installment of the Unusuals fic this weekend. I'll post it here, on ff.net, and on my website, too.

I want to include the playlist that's been inspiring me along the way, so I think my own website will be the right place to do that. I have pictures and quotes in mind, too. My desire is to have each of the five parts of the story as much like an episode of the show as possible, since it didn't get its fair run on TV.

More soon.
Cheers!

I am The Sad. This is my last lazy Friday afternoon of the summer. Monday I must begin to partition off the parts of my brain that live in fiction and fandom. I lament thus every year, and I realize it’s a bit like a toddler throwing a tantrum at bedtime.

Like, “I don’t wanna go to school.” Wah.

I did just spend nine awesome weeks camped on my couch with my Daughter and our cats. We spent indecorous amounts of time blogging and watching Netflix. We befriended a bevy of neighborhood birds, planted and maintained a garden, found a ton of amazing new music to love (Fun., Goldberg Sisters, Passion Pit, Florence + the Machine), and wrote lots of fanfiction.

Dude, this was the best summer ever. We didn’t even go anywhere! Therefore, I am not The Sad. I am The Happy.

Okay, enough random text posting. I have an Unusuals fic to finish before Monday.

Writing

I have a writer's hangover. This should be a thing.

I'm writing this Unusuals fic and I love it so much, it hurts. The characters are living in my mind, breathing, conversing, solving problems, making allusions to popular works of art and fiction. They are fighting and falling in love. They're in pain. They're happy. They're alive.

And the whole time, from the small corner of my brain where the cynical tentacly beast lives, a voice is whispering, "Why waste your time writing a story that no one will ever read?"

I'm indulgent. Maybe? I write because I love to write. Definitely. These characters have crowded into my mind and have taken over for a while. This story is a gift for my daughter because she loves the show and needed some closure, and what better way to do that than to give the characters a really good story?

So I'm writing like a mad woman. It's my favorite place to be, in my head with a cast of characters I know like my own family, in places that will never exist beyond the matter of my brain. If this is insanity, I embrace it. Let me live in the world of my own heart.
